Stewardship to Amaekpu Ohafia
Elder (Hon) Udo Igwe (April 16, 1929 – December 15, 1996) began early to work for Amaekpu Community that he loved so much. Between 1951 and 1955, while he was still at the School of Pharmacy, Yaba, he became the Secretary to the then Amaekpu Family Union in Lagos. From the 1950s to the late 1960s he was also Secretary to Amaekpu Ndi Ije, a position which caused him to travel often from Lagos to Aba for meetings. During the Biafra-Nigeria Civil War, a period marked with great difficulties, he was the Chairman, Amaekpu Civil Defense Council (ACDC) which oversaw wartime administrative issues concerning the security and welfare of the community. It was in this capacity that after the cessation of hostilities between the warring parties in January 1970 that he led a few others to negotiate the return of the community from the bushes, where they had fled to in the last days of the war.
In 1973, he became the President-General of Amaekpu Development Union (ADU) and was in that position for eight years, a peaceful era that was characterized by a lot of community developments. It was a period when electricity and pipe-borne water were reticulated to other parts of the village.
